Columbia, Mo. – ÎçÒ¹Ó°Ôº System President Mun Choi today declared university operations and classes will be closed tomorrow, June 18, in observance of Juneteenth following announcements in recent days by both the federal government and the state of Missouri.

Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas — two months after the Confederacy had surrendered and about 2 1/2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

University employees should check with their supervisors who will identify those needed to fulfill critical duties tomorrow. Some activities scheduled with external constituents and visitors (i.e. visiting students and parents) will continue as scheduled. Any missed classes will be made up at a later time. MU Health Care will continue operations as usual.
