We have put together a list of news articles that will keep you informed of the actions taken by the executive, legislative, and judicial branch of government. These articles are meant to be informative and are not a reflection of the views or stance of the system regarding these issues.

House Appropriations Committee – June 28, 2024
The House of Representatives met to consider the Defense Appropriations Act, 2025. The measure was approved by a vote of 217 to 198. The Defense Appropriations Act provides a total discretionary allocation of $833.053 billion, which is $8.57 billion (1%) above the Fiscal Year 2024 level and consistent with the limit set in law by the Fiscal Responsibility Act.

House Appropriations Committee – June 27, 2024
The House Appropriations Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee met to consider its Fiscal Year 2025 bill. The measure was approved by the Subcommittee.

A summary of the bill is available . A few takeaways below. 

  • Providing $48 billion in funding to support biomedical research, which is necessary to counter China’s growing threat in basic science research.
  • Provides $48 billion to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is equal to the FY24 enacted level.
  • Provides a discretionary total of $72 billion for the Department of Education, which is $11 billion (13%) below the FY24 enacted level and $14.5 billion below the President’s Budget Request.
  • The Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act total discretionary allocation of $185.8 billion, which is $8.6 billion (4%) below the Fiscal Year 2024 enacted score, $23.8 billion (11%) below the Fiscal Year 2024 effective spending level, and $36.2 billion (15%) below the President’s Budget Request.

The House Appropriations Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Subcommittee met to consider its Fiscal Year 2025 bill. Project funding for the ÎçÒ¹Ó°Ôº Research Reactor (MURR) was included along with funding for the Missouri Water Center.

House Appropriations Committee – June 27, 2024
The House Appropriations Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Subcommittee met to consider its Fiscal Year 2025 bill. The measure was approved by the Subcommittee. Project funding for MU’s North Missouri Weather Monitoring project was included along with funding for UMSL’s building renovation project for dyslexia screenings.

Capitol Hill News


House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure – June 26, 2024
The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee today approved the Water Resources Development Act of 2024 (WRDA), legislation that authorizes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) Civil Works Program for projects to improve the nation’s ports and harbors, inland waterway navigation, flood and storm protection, and other aspects of our water resources infrastructure. WRDA (H.R. 8812) was introduced in the House by T&I Chairman Sam Graves (R-MO).
