The Hill 鈥 May 23, 2024
Democrats and Republicans on the House Agriculture Committee sparred over food aid on Thursday at the markup of the chamber鈥檚 version of the $1.5 trillion omnibus farm bill. Lawmakers fiercely debated whether Republican attempts to freeze changes to the U.S. Department of Agriculture food aid programs were 鈥渃uts鈥 amid broader tensions over whether the bill as put forward by House Republicans is sufficiently bipartisan to have any hopes of passage.

Congressman Bob Good 鈥 May 23, 2024
Congressman Bob Good (VA-05) introduced the Protecting Student Athlete鈥檚 Economic Freedom Act, which states that a student athlete may not be considered an employee of an institution, conference, or association. Rep. Good鈥檚 bill aims to preserve the integrity of collegiate sports and safeguard educational opportunities for student athletes.

The settlement could resolve three major antitrust lawsuits against the NCAA that carry the threat of some $20 billion in damages, a blow that would cripple the organization. The settlement includes dramatic changes to the NCAA鈥檚 amateur sports model, including revenue-sharing by schools with their athletes.

Inside Higher Ed 鈥 May 23, 2024
Republicans on the House Education and Workforce Committee went on the offensive during a hearing on college antisemitism. The three university leaders from Northwestern, Rutgers, and UCLA, were pressed frequently on their responses to campus protests, disciplinary action and how they are meting out punishment for those accused of harassing Jewish students during the three-hour hearing.
